‘Most ideas start off as jottings and doodles in one of the A5 sketchbooks that I carry round with me. They later find form in sculptures, models and maquettes, and will occasionally make their way into paintings, drawings or a collage of some description.

‘Recently, I’ve been playing around with the 3-D objects and various backdrops in Photoshop and Ai, working out compositional permutations, and seeing how Artificial Intelligence interprets my own work and ideas. The latter exercise involves going through a process of visual and textual prompts, reiterations and responses, as though negotiating with a machine, until I arrive at something compelling. The reasoning behind this is to create visual ideas to act as springboards for other paintings and collages etc, and never as ends in themselves, but probably the truth lies closer to them being distractions; something to entertain myself.’
